Abstract

Why are there two versions of the Book of Psalms in Jerome?s Vulgate? For a long time Jerome, in his transmission of the Psalms from the Greek, was bound to the literalism of his time. In his later years in Bethlehem, he becomes freer in his translations in the laborious confrontation with the Hebraica veritas and the Jewish people of his environment. He thus creates a second interesting version of the entire Book of Psalms. This article now deals with the nuances and partial aspects.
