Abstract

Jerome follows in his translation of the Book of Ruth his Hebrew Vorlage more or less literally. Some insertions into the text and some emendations of the text lead to a more appropriate understanding of the tale among his audience. His most striking textual variants nevertheless are pious Christian insertions – especially according to the moral code of Ruth – and the avoiding of any redemptional metaphor.
