Insult formulas have also found their way into the Vulgate and the theological discourse of late antiquity. When categorized it becomes evident that their structure has not been changed throughout the centuries. Being supposedly an irascible character Jerome advocated his theological theories rather polemically but on the other hand set great store on translating biblical invectives in a precise and objective way. And being familiar with classics he favoured pagan insult formulas when translating biblical languages and their imagery into Latin.
