„Civitas Solis“? An Old Text-critical Problem in Isaiah 19:18 Re-examined

Abstract

For centuries, the Vulgate was the only widely circulated and received version of the Bible that preserved the original name „City of the Sun“ (as it appears already in Qumran texts) for the city mentioned in Isa 19:18. In the Masoretic Text, the name is „City of Destruction,“ while the Septuagint versions offer various incomprehensible transcription attempts.
