Augustine’s comments on selected verses of Job, ch. 1 were jotted down on the margins of his codex of Job. When preparing the Adnotationes on Job for publication (against Augustine’s intention), the editor had to transcribe the glosses together with the lemmata concerned and to co-ordinate them correctly. In the middle part of ch. 1 he significantly failed in this task. Besides the resulting confusion, the transmitted text is marred by a lacuna due to haplography. The authors (who are working towards an edition of the Adnotationes) try to reconstruct Augustine’s original train of thought and selection of lemmata at the centre of Job, ch. 1.
