A comparison of the Masoretic text and the Septuagint text of Ps 44[45] with the text of the Vulgate iuxta Hebraicum leads to the surprising result that Jerome translates difficult passages very precisely and in accordance with the Masoretic text. In less challenging passages, on the other hand, he allows himself to be more influenced by the Septuagint. In any case, it turns out that the Hebrew text used by Jerome was almost, but presumably not completely, identical to the Masoretic text known today.
