About the Journal

ISSN 2504-5156

The Vulgate in Dialogue is an international peer-reviewed on-line academic journal, with open access, founded in 2016, that publishes once a year articles in biblical exegesis, theology in general, philology, history and other fields related to the domain of the Biblia Sacra Vulgata. The journal is hosted by the University Library of Tübingen, IT Department, Publishing and e-Learning Services.

Starting from 2021 the journal is included in ERIH PLUS (European Reference Index for the Humanities and Social Sciences).

The work of translating and editing the Vulgate within two similar projects almost simultaneously launched – the one in German (Vulgata Verein / Walter de Gruyter Berlin, initiated in 2011) and the one in Romanian (A. I. Cuza University, Traditio Centre, Jassy / Humanitas publishing house, that started in 2010) —, revealed specific issues that are worth publishing for the benefit of the biblical studies as a whole. Our journal intends to contribute to research in the field of the Vulgate, with approaches from various fields, including the inter-disciplinary ones.

The Peer Review Process

After receiving an article for the Online Review Vulgata in Dialogue, the editors check that it matches the content of the online review and that the guidelines for authors are adhered to. If these conditions are met, two independent academic experts are asked to read and rate the article. The editors ensure that the two experts are not connected to the same university or institution as the author of the article. During the entire evaluation process, they do not know the identity of the author. The task of the specialists is to write an evaluation report for the article using a given form. The specialists evaluate according to the criteria of this form with the following focal points:topic of the article – working method used – content - language and style – validity of the conclusions - references and quotations used. They can also provide further explanations, comments or recommendations. Finally, they decide whether the article should be published or rejected. They justify using the three possible options:
• acceptance of the article without revision
• acceptance of the article with revision (problematic areas should be evident in the report).
• rejection of the article (with justification in the report)

In the second and third case, the articles are returned to the authors. If the reviewers ask for corrections, the article can be revised and then re-submitted for re-evaluation. If it now meets the criteria of the form and the reviewers, the article will be published.
